Moonstruck by Glaser’s Bakery, Yorkville
Welcome to Glaser’s Bakery. This place has been a fixture on First Avenue since 1902! The history is really sweet and can be found here on their website About page. It is the story of a truly family run business. Skipping to the History page, one learns how the bakery began baking regular bread, with ovens powered by coal in the basement. Kind of conjures up visions of the famous Nicolas Cage scene in Moonstruck :
“I lost my hand! I lost my bride! Johnny has his hand!…”
Ok, OK, Glaser’s is NOT Italian, but it’s too great of a scene not to link to it….
Back to Glaser’s, when you walk inside, you feel like you are transported back to a simpler time. Take a peek….
The menu of baked goods is full of classic American favorites: old fashioned doughnuts, apple turnovers, assorted muffins, Challah, Irish Soda Bread, assorted danishes, Rugalach, sticky buns, black and white cookies, whoopie pies, brownies, cupcakes, and pies just to name a few.
It is completely un-pretentious.
I went into the shop on Saturday afternoon and got a small assorted box of cookies (about 1/4 pound) for about $5. My favorite one was a delicious peanut butter cookie dipped in chocolate.
Now, something interesting happened while I was in the store. There were probably two people working at the counter, two customers being served, and one gentleman ahead of me in line. One of the employees was having a conversation with a customer about something happening in the neighborhood (gossip or what have you). Because of that, the gentleman in front of me got really annoyed and after a few moments, stormed out of the place.
But the lady at the counter didn’t care. She knew that he was just passing through and that the customer she was talking to was her real customer, a regular neighborhood gal. I loved it. This is a business that has stood the test of time. They know what they are doing. Hopefully they will be around for another couple of centuries…
