Bedtime song post: Sweet Melissa

I love the Allman Brothers Band, and most especially the song Melissa.  The guitar is beautiful for sure, but something about the lyrics of the song appeal to me.

I kind of imagine Greg Allman writing this for his own wife to tell her that, even if he strayed a bit on the road, not to worry, that he would always float back to her, and that she was always on his mind anyway.  (Don’t know if a word of that is true !)…I don’t know too much about the band, just love some of their songs.  However, I heard through the grape vine that the fictional band “Stillwater” in the movie Almost Famous was loosely based on them – or at least in part inspired by them since Cameron Crowe followed one of their tours.  I picture the Russell character needing to sing this love song to his wife, given that he seemed to have muses while on the road…

Knowing many, loving none

Bearing sorrow, havin’ fun…

But back home he’ll always run

To Sweet Melissa

According to an interview (San Luis Obispo Tribune, 2006), Greg Allman came upon the name “Melissa” and thought it fit right while in a grocery store over hearing a mom yelling to her kid.

Another weekend is upon us.  Good night all, and sweet dreams…
